Latency with online user & chat rooms

Closed 2.2.8

Sent you a message a week or so ago. So there's a weird issue on my clients site where the online list takes a good while to start showing users, sporadicly. There's no rhyme or reason and nothing in the logs in this regard.

Other issue is that the room selection is also not present when the online list is not present.

Suggestions on what to look for?

could be the latency between the user and the server. or the latency introduced by things like cloudflare and or setting up a proxy in apache (as this can be extremely slow, nginx proxies are faster, but not by much). you could also try different ports, some ISP will throttle higher ports cause they thing the only reason you would be using a higher port is cause you are a pirate, your host themselves might be throttling the port as well.

I'm not sure if it's latency from user/server. Babble is on the same server as the forum solution is, the only thing it affects with chat is JUST the online list and rooms. Chats are not delayed in anyway..

There is no cloudfare or proxies setup.

Using same port as the one in your install directions, but I can change this.

is there anything in the console? there is a bug in 2.2.8 and 2.3.3 of the service version, that menu counts aren't working and i've been advising people to disable them for the time being, but they shouldn't be interfering with the online list.  can you give me an idea how long it takes for the online list to load? it doesn't show users who are logged in anonymously btw. if it takes more than a minute or so (cause there is a interval set to grab and update the list every 45 seconds), then its latency issue, if it with in that 45 seconds, its not getting the list for some reason upon initial connection (which is unique here, as this is the first i'm hearing of it).

try this:

create/edit your constants.php and add this line to it:

define( 'DEBUG_LOG', true);

then go to the babble room, and check ACP->System->Support->System Log, see if there are any logs there from babble. might be something wrong with elephant.io

Hey, sorry for the big delay. I was TDY for a couple months... gotta love the military.

The issue still pertains, but I'm not sure what version they are on off the top of my head, I assume there's been a couple versions since I've been gone :-).

Here is the exact message of the issues they get though after following up with them.

"No one shows up in the one room when several are there - second room is set up but does not appear when you enter chat and there is no option to select the second, most people need to refresh in order to view any comments, we have no way to set permissions for chat mods or to be able to have topic chats or guest speakers without a free for all,"

A couple of the 'issues' sounds like it's permissions based and I can fix that, but the thing I'm mostly concerned about is the latency/commenting issues.

2.5.0 was released today, in 2.4.x there was a huge amount of work done to the online list. please upgrade to the latest to see if this issue is resolved (as it no longer uses the elephant.io to build the online list, it is a pure javascript implementation now).

The rooms also do not appear or are selectable. Kind of the same issue with the online list. I'll upgrade here soon to test on it and see if it's been resolved.

yes,  upgrade. the room issue was fixed several versions back and the online list in 2.4.0 was redone (and the new version 2.6.0 set to come out tomorrow will have fixes for the online lists). till you upgrade there is no further point in reporting issues as i do believe all of them have already been resolved.
